Shai Feldman is the newly appointed director of the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University, where he will also hold a faculty appointment in the politics department. Scheduled to open in early April, the Crown Center's defining goal is to broaden scholarship by promoting the entire Arab world, Israel, Turkey, and Iran, and to include such topics as economic development, religion, politics, security, ethnic relations, and geographic questions in the region. Feldman is the former head of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University where he was a senior research associate since its establishment in 1977. He also serves on the Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. In 2001-2003, Feldman served as a member of the U.N. Secretary General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. He has written extensively on nuclear proliferation, Israeli national security, domestic politics, and U.S. foreign and defense policies in the Middle East. Mr. Feldman first lectured at Chautauqua during a week on the Middle East in 1993.
