Dr. John M. Templeton, Jr. serves as president of the John Templeton Foundation, directing all Foundation activities in pursuit of its mission to encourage progress in scientific and religious knowledge. Dr. Templeton has been actively involved in the Foundation since its inception in 1987, and retired from his medical practice in 1995 to serve full-time as president. He earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University, and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Having trained as a pediatric surgeon under Dr. C. Everett Koop, he served on the staff of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as a pediatric surgeon and trauma program director. He also served as professor of pediatric surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to numerous papers in medical journals, Dr. Templeton has also authored two books, A Searcher's Life and Thrift and Generosity: The Joy of Giving.
