The Right Rev. John Bryson Chane was installed as the eighth Bishop of Washington on June 1, 2002, at Washington National Cathedral. He retired in November 2011. He continues to serve the Cathedral as senior advisor for interfaith relations.
Formerly the dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, San Diego, California since 1996, he previously served as rector of St. Mark’s Church, Southborough, Massachusetts from 1987 to 1996; as canon pastor of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Erie, Pennsylvania from 1975 to 1987; and as curate and priest-in-charge of St. Paul’s Church, Montvale, New Jersey from 1972 to 1975. He holds degrees from Boston University (BA) and Yale Divinity School (M.Div).
Bishop Chane has chaired the Commissions on Ministry for the Diocese of Massachusetts, served as a key leader on the Massachusetts Mission, Program and Planning Committee, served as a member of the diocesan Personnel and Deployment Commission, and was a parish vacancy consultant. He was one of the original members of the diocesan Percept Team and was actively involved in restructuring the Diocese of Massachusetts.
