The Rev. Thomas A. Sweet is Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Jamestown, New York, and a long-time Chautauquan. A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, he served congregations in Baltimore before coming to Jamestown in 1994. Very active in the Jamestown community, Rev. Sweet was instrumental in founding, chartering, and guiding a low-income community development credit union in Jamestown to serve members of the community who do not have access to traditional banking and lending opportunities and who need financial literacy education. Rev. Sweet served as President of its Board until its recent merger. Rev. Sweet has also fostered numerous multicultural, interracial, and inter-religious relationships and projects in Jamestown, and has been a relentless advocate for young children and early childhood education at the state and local levels. He has helped his church to provide hospitality housing for people recovering from addictions, and the church helps hundreds of people each year who experience emergency needs with food, travel, rent, and heat. In addition, Rev. Sweet has occupied several positions of leadership in the Presbytery of Western New York. He describes himself as a pastor first of all, whose great passion is to help people to see the interconnectedness of all life and to think and to live with theological integrity and compassion.
