Rev. Nathan D. Baxter

The Very Rev. Nathan D. Baxter is the retired dean of Washington National Cathedral, a position he served since 1991. He was administrative dean and associate professor of pastoral theology at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., 1990-92; acting president of Lancaster (Pa.) Theological Seminary, 1989; dean and associate professor of church and ministry at Lancaster Seminary, 1986-90; chaplain and professor of philosophy and religion at Saint Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Va., 1984-86; rector of St. Cyprian's Church in Hampton, Va., 1978-84; and curate at St. John's Church in Carlisle, Pa., 1976-78. Nathan is a native of Coatesville, Pa., and has been married to Mary Ellen, administrator of an Episcopal school, since 1969. Their adult children are Timika Ann and Harrison David. and they have one grandchild. In the U.S. Army he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palms and the Combat Medic Badge. He served on the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Southern Virginia and is a life member of the Union of Black Episcopalians.
