Rev. John M Buchanan

The Rev. John M. Buchanan is pastor of Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago, where he has served since 1985, prior to which he had served as pastor of The First Presbyterian Church of Dyer, Indiana; Bethany Presbyterian Church, Lafayette, Indiana; and Broad Street Presbyterian Church, Columbus, Ohio. He has also served the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in a variety of capacities: as Presbytery Moderator, General Assembly Council and as Moderator of the 208th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 1996-1997. He has represented the Presbyterian Church as a member of the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches and as an Observer to the Seventh Assembly of The World Council of Churches in Canberra, Australia.Editor/Publisher of The Christian Century Magazine, for which he writes a regular column, John Buchanan is President of the Board of Trustees of McCormick Theological Seminary and a member of the Board of The Greater Chicago Broadcast Ministry. He has in the past served on Boards of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, The Presbyterian Home, Muskingum College, and Alma College.A native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Rev. Buchanan received his B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and his B.D. /M.Div. from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago and The Chicago Theological Seminary. He has received honorary degrees from Muskingum College, Coe College, Alma College, Presbyterian College, Westminster College, Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Colgate University, North Park University, Wabash College, Loyola University, and Franklin & Marshall College. He is the author of Being Church, Becoming Community, and with Elam Davies, Sermons for the City.
